Literature Text

Little red ants on the highway banner
Coppertop streaks fill a fading sky
Buckshot fireflies fly right past
And a pair of pale eyes from a mast,

And they sing:

Burn down, burn down, said the Gunsolly Squares
Said the Gunsolly Squares in the street

And they sing:

Burn down, burn down, said the Gunsolly Squares
Said the Gunsolly Squares in the street.

Fifteen years pass the infantry, and a thousand pass the shore.
The infants cry from a marble sheet
And the Gunsolly Squares in the street all sing:

We burned it down, burned it to the ground!
And the world is flat as slate!
From a land of love and a land of joy
We have built a world of hate!

But the rains, they came for a century
And the Gunsolly Squares all sank!
And the ants came back, and the coppertop streaks
filled the pale blue sky like a sheet!

And they sang:

Bless the rains that the Gunsolly Squares are gone!
They are gone, they are gone at last!
That the ants and the streaks and the flies are back
like a pair of pale eyes from a mast!

And no burning now will come to pass
Nor will anything be flat!
for the Gunsolly Squares, they are gone at last!
They are gone and that is that!
Written in the car.

Hm...part of me interprets this as 'yay, the killing is gone and the world is back'. But then the other part sort of interprets it like a cycle...like now that the gunsolly squares are gone, the people would start to build again and it would all begin anew.
The horror of war vs. the inevitability of the cycle of war.
